It is very true that flyfishing is catching on and more and more anglers are discovering that fishing with a fly may be as productive, and sometimes more so, than other types of fishing. However, the majority of the 46 million anglers in the United States have probably never touched a fly rod, let alone fished with one.

You can help change this. By joining a flyfishing club near you that takes an active local role in fishery enhancement, education, and promotion of the sport, you will make a difference to ensure that more folks become aware of our sport. I know that there are some fly anglers who really don't want to see more anglers on the local stream, but it seems to me that for the most part, flyfishers do seem to take a greater interest in the environment and have more of a desire for the conservation of fish. This is not to say that other anglers do not have the same level of concern, but I believe there is a greater concentration of fly anglers who do.

By joining a club, you are adding your support behind the work that is going on. With greater numbers, clubs and associations are in a better position to lobby Governments, related organizations and even the corporate sector for necessary funds and resources to help further and protect the sport you love.

There are a number of great national and international organizations that you could consider. Probably the biggest and best known is the Federation Of Fly Fishers. Around for over 32 years, the Federation has grown to about 260 local chapters around the world.

As well as the FFF, there are a number of other large organization that do some impressive work. One of my favorites is the Atlantic Salmon Federation. In existence for over 50 years, the ASF is intensely involved in promoting the conservation of Atlantic Salmon throughout the world. As well, members receive a subscription to an excellent publication, The Atlantic Salmon Journal.

Of course, there are a great number of smaller clubs and associations at the local level that do good work as well. Many of them offer casting lessons, fly tying instruction, and of course, during fishing season, club outings and competitions. During non-fishing seasons, you will often find yourself at a gathering of other fly anglers, enjoying fellowship, listening to guest speakers, or discussing some new fly that another member has found successful. Take a look at our Clubs/Associations area, and you might find one close to you! You will find that there are even clubs that are specifically aimed at women, as well. If you can't find a club near your home, why not start one?

There are a number of great reasons to get involved with a club or association. Of course, we have discussed many of the benefits but the most important benefit is how it will benefit you! You will enjoy the pleasure of knowing you are helping to do something to further the conservation of fish, learn a few more things that you didn't know, and have the opportunity to meet with and enjoy the fellowship of other fly anglers.

So, get out there and support a local club, or one of the larger ones that you feel comfortable with! Discussion: Does your club/association have any special events planned for National Fishing Week? Tell us what you are going to do to celebrate this week in our Flyfishing Forum.
