Over two and a half million dollars later, Trout Unlimited (TU) is celebrating 25 years of stream restoration throughout North America. This year, the organization has awarded close to a quarter million dollars to various TU Chapters through its 'Embrace A Stream' program.

Because of Trout Unlimited's program, many rivers and streams in the United States have dramatically improved conditions for the trout that live in them. This year, TU funded projects are underway on Pennsylvania's Lititz Run, the Gratiot River which flows into Lake Superior in Michigan, and a large effort in Great Smoky Mountains National Park aims at returning trout that have suffered due to high levels of acid rain in the area.

This year, the Jackson Hole One Fly Foundation contributed $50,000.00 to Embrace A Stream projects. This organization operates the One Fly Competition, held at Jackson Hole annually since 1986.

In order to qualify for funds from TU, a project must meet strenuous requirements. Each application is evaluated by a panel of TU scientific advisors and regional representatives. The proposals must be scientifically sound in order to receive any consideration. As well, applicants must match dollar for dollar the amount being sought from TU. This may be in the form of volunteer labor, and gifts or donations.

Probably the most valuable part is the volunteer labor. Without strong local support, stream rehabilitation projects would probably not occur and be as successful as they are. Most of the work that is done is provided by members of local chapters of Trout Unlimited. As well, Embrace A Stream funds are usually entirely from the pockets of TU members. This year of course, One Fly Foundation provided a tremendous amount on top of members' donations.

The Canadian Trout Unlimited organization also has a similar program that it oversees. Called the "Habitat Program," volunteers actively participate in the restoration of degraded watersheds. Activities include tree planting, assisting land owners with advice and consulation with livestock management practices, as well as education.

New Zealand also has an affiliate Trout Unlimited, while in Great Britain the organization is called the Wild Trout Society.
