The good folks at Trout Unlimted have done a great job of putting up an informative and educational website. For sometime, they were using the domain name of www.troutunlimited.org. In fact, I had several links to much of their content. Who would have thought that you would have to watch your children surfing over to troutunlimited.org?
Unfortunately, we do need to warn you about visiting troutunlimited.org. It was brought to my attention a couple of weeks ago that some of the links that I had were actually going to a Porn site.. not the information on the same type of flies that a fly angler has in mind.
It seems that Trout Unlimited organization did own the domain name troutunlimited.org at one time, but they must have let it go for some reason or other. Someone else has snatched it up, and is now using it to direct traffic to an adult porn site. There is a small 'Warning' on the site, but the word 'ENTER' is much bigger.
Upon discovering the problem with the domain, I sent off an email to the webmaster of the present Trout Unlimited site which is now using the domain www.tu.org. I asked them if their organization had any plans to deal with the issue and offered that many people, including children would very likely type troutunlimited.org into their browswer when trying to find Trout Unlimited's website.
Tommy Schultz of TU responded today and wrote,
"Our legal department has been working to straighten this out. This will be taken care of soon. Please visit www.tu.org for the latest in Coldwater Conservation news. Thanks for supporting TU!"
I imagine that if the TU legal department is looking into the issue, then Tommy isn't at liberty to say much more on the matter. It would be nice though to know that this situation will be straightened out fairly soon. The present owner of the troutunlimited.org domain is advertising that this domain name is for sale.
I have to thank Al Penaluna, one of the visitors to the About Fly Fishing site for pointing this matter out to me. Al was browsing the Entomology section here, and discovered the links to the domain in question. I agree with Al, as he writes, "I think it is innapropriate for this kind of thing to be on a fishing site."
This type of thing is all the more reason why parents should take extra care when their children are surfing the 'net. You just never know when a site's domain name has changed ownership, and you might not find what it was you thought you would!.
