![]() Ian James, a professional fly casting and tying instructor in Ontario, Canada once mentioned to me that in his opinion, it was much easier to teach women how to fly fish than men who had previous fishing experience. He indicated that quite often, men had their own preconceived notions about proper style and technique, whereas most female students came to his classes with a different type of attitude. I came away from the conversation with the impression that for the most part, women seem to have a better aptitude for learning proper casting and can become proficient faster than men. Whether or not Mr. James' observations are correct, it is true that for the most part, fly fishing has been seen by many as a man's domain. As we discovered in an article last year, this should not be the case, especially considering that the first known literature in the English language about fly fishing was written by a woman, Dame Juliana Berners in the year 1486. As many of you already know, we are planning a Flyfishing Chat for Women on October 30, 1999, which will be hosted by Cecilia 'Pudge" Kleinkaupf, owner of Women's Flyfishing® of Alaska, U.S.A. Pudge has a great deal of experience both in guiding and instructing women in the sport of flyfishing. She has owned her business for 15 years has taught and guided fly fishing in some one of the most pristine locations in the world. Because of her location on the Talachulitna River, women have the opportunity to master both heavy and light fly fishing, while acquiring skills with both wet and dry flies. The Talachulitna River is well known for its trophy size Rainbow Trout & Salmon as well as smaller trout species. This is an appropriate time to review the fly fishing resources available for women. In the past year, we have seen a tremendous increase in interest in flyfishing in women. As well, there are quite a number of men who would very much enjoy discovering ways to instill a desire to learn more about fly fishing in their wives and female friends. I would encourage you to take a look at our Women's Resources category for more resources that are available to you and invite you to take part in the chat session with Pudge. As well, you might also want to consider a couple of interesting books. Joan Wulff is considered to be one of the premeire fly anglers of all time and wrote Joan Wulff's Flyfishing: Expert Advice From A Woman's Perspective in 1991. Different Angle: Fly Fishing Stories By Women, edited by Holly Morris contains 17 stories by women aficianados of fly fishing, including Le Anne Schreiber, Sally Stoner, Elizabeth Arnold, E. Annie Proulx, Pam Houston and Gretchen Legler. Flyfishing doesn't have to be a man's only domain, and the number of women who are tying their own flies, building rods, and taking up the sport is certainly on the increase!
Last Week On All-About Flyfishing: Poisoning The Water Save the environment by killing the trout. It's happening and its government sanctioned. Last Year On All-About Flyfishing: Christmas Island Which Christmas Island will you dream about?
