Gifts For The Fly Tying Bench

You're driving along a road at night, when the car in front of you stops suddenly on the shoulder. You watch while the driver leaps out and runs toward a dead fox laying in the ditch. Carefully, he lifts the fox and throws the carcass into the trunk of his car. Was it the road clean-up crew? More than likely it was an avid fly tier, who would hate to see any animal hair or fur go to waste!

Apart from the fact that some fly tiers seem to enjoy collecting dead animals, they really are not crazy. Some of the most skilled ones produce work that is not only considered to be highly productive as far as fishing goes, but is also seen by many as art. Give a fly tier some shadow boxes, in which he can frame the best of his flies and hang them on the wall, and he will appreciate your discerning taste in fine art.

One of the biggest needs of serious fly tiers is more space to store stuff. It's not always easy organizing feathers from peacocks and genetically raised chicken saddles while also keeping track of pieces of pelt from rabbits, bears, calf tails and other assorted bits of hair, thread, floss, and of course, hooks. If you're tired of finding pieces of skunk on your table while your fly tying friend is experimenting with some new pattern, you might want to consider providing them with a storage system, with lots of trays, dividers and slots for different things.

Better yet, a complete fly tying bench is the dream of many a fly tier. Usually made of a fine wood, these benches or desks often have built in organizers, space savers, and well thought out tying areas. Most of them, especially those built by other fly tiers, are of excellent quality. You would expect that a fly tier who takes pride in their own work, while always thinking up ways to improvise on slow fishing days will have the creativity and level of quality to produce well thought out fly tying benches.

Sometimes it can be difficult to store all the spools of threads that are used in various colors by the tier. A great Box-Stor system by Uni-Products goes along way to help solve this storage problem. As well, no fly tier would ever be disappointed with any of the other Uni-Products goods thrown in as well. They will always come in handy.

If you want to spend a little extra money, you could consider a fly tying vice by Renzetti. My favorite is the Presentation 4000 series, with the C-clamp base. Another great vice from Renzetti is their Traveller Vice, in the $130.00 to $150.00 range. Both of these products are on my Christmas list! (*Hint hint to all those that bought me so many copies of The Compleat Angler a couple of Christmases ago!)

For those that want to spend a little less money, the Thompson Pro-Vice offers excellent quality at a lower price. Many fly tiers started out with a Thompson.

If you know of specific tools that the recipient of your gift would like, there are a number of places on the Internet that offer great service and a great selection. Take a look at our Fly Shops category and visit some of the great on-line stores listed there.

You also may want to consider this great deal on hooks from Lines End. A great price for a great stocking stuffer!
